Automobile Four-Wheeler Mechanic

An Automobile Four-Wheeler Mechanic is a skilled technical professional responsible for inspecting, maintaining, diagnosing, and repairing passenger cars, SUVs, and light commercial vehicles.

Key Responsibilities

• Inspection & Diagnostics:Utilize OBD-II diagnostic scanners, pressure gauges, and physical checks to identify mechanical, electrical, and electronic faults.
• Engine & Transmission Service: Perform routine engine oil changes, spark plug replacements, air filter changes, and major engine or gearbox overhauls.
• System Repairs:Inspect and repair critical vehicle subsystems, including hydraulic brakes, suspension, steering geometry, exhaust systems, and climate control (car AC).
• Electrical & Sensor Maintenance: Test car batteries, alternators, wiring harnesses, starter motors, and safety system sensors (ABS, airbags).
• Preventative Maintenance: Perform wheel alignment, wheel balancing, tyre rotations, and general periodic safety checks.

Eligibility & Entry Pathways

• Educational Qualification:10th or 12th Pass.
• Technical Training Paths:
  • ITI / Vocational Certification:1 to 2-year ITI Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV) trade course.
  • Diploma in Automobile Engineering:3-year post-10th polytechnic diploma.
  • Garage Apprenticeship: Direct hands-on learning as an apprentice or helper under a master mechanic in local workshops or dealership service centers.
• Key Skills Required:Diagnostic thinking, knowledge of engine mechanics, hand-tool proficiency, basic electrical/electronic understanding, and physical stamina.

• Authorized OEM Dealerships: Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata Motors, Mahindra, Toyota, etc.
• Multi-Brand Service Chains: GoMechanic, Mahindra First Choice, Bosch Car Service.
• Independent Workshops: Local auto garages, custom tuning shops, or self-owned repair businesses.

Pay Scale (India)

• Helper / Trainee: ₹10,000 – ₹15,000 per month.
• Junior Mechanic (1–3 years): ₹18,000 – ₹28,000 per month.
• Senior Specialist / Master Technician:₹35,000 – ₹60,000+ per month (EV and luxury vehicle specialists command higher pay).
